Does a bidet actually pay for itself?

A bidet a day keeps the paper aisle away.

  • A household of four gets through something like three hundred rolls a year, about $340, spent a few dollars at a time in a way nobody ever adds up.
  • A $60 attachment pays for itself in three months, then saves about $258 a year.
  • Water and sewer add $8 a year. Skipped store runs save about $1. Neither changes anything.
  • Toilet paper is also the first thing to vanish from the shelves in a scare, and a household that has stopped buying it cannot be charged the panic price. That gets a figure of its own below, priced only as the markup avoided.
  • Buy store brand at 45 cents a roll and the saving drops by 60 percent, pushing payback out to seven months.
  • A $450 electric seat plus $150 of wiring takes about two and a half years, and a wired seat does not leave with you at the end of a lease.
  • Everything above depends on one number: how much paper you actually stop buying. Nobody stops entirely, because you still have to dry off.

This figure prices a risk rather than a bill, counting only the markup a household would have avoided paying, and the table further down carries the same amount on a row of its own, flagged as an estimate. What it is worth to stop thinking about the aisle altogether goes unpriced, because no honest number for it exists.

How much paper a bidet displaces

Both figures above rest on this one setting, which is where almost every calculator making the case for a bidet goes wrong, by assuming the paper goes to zero. It never does. Reported reductions run 60 to 90 percent, and where your household lands in that range depends on who is using it and how much paper the drying still takes.

A percentage has to be a percentage of something, and these three numbers are it. They set what your household spends on paper in a year, which is the figure every saving on this page is measured against.

The hardware

Against that annual spend sits a one-time bill, and payback is just the race between the two. An attachment you fit yourself in twenty minutes and a seat that needs an electrician are different propositions, and the difference lands on the payback date rather than on the yearly saving.

An attachment is a wrench and twenty minutes. Put a plumber's fee here if the shutoff valve is seized, missing or unreachable, or an electrician's if a seat needs an outlet.

Water and sewer

The first thing anyone says is that a bidet only moves the cost from paper to water, so the rate field takes water and sewer together, sewer being billed on water volume and frequently the larger of the two charges. Even loaded that way the term stays small, and the table below shows exactly how small.

About one a day is typical. The default of three is set high so the water cost is not understated.

The emergency run

Running out sends somebody to the store, and that trip is the only driving a bidet actually saves. So only the extra run is counted here. A full grocery trip happens either way, and billing it to toilet paper is how a calculator manufactures a saving that was never there.

Two terms that rest on probability estimates

Two things in the calculation are odds rather than charges, and both are here because dropping them would flatter the answer in one direction or the other. One of them is the shortage figure from the top of the page, and the other is what happens the first time a child works out what the lever does. Each is a probability multiplied by a cost, so neither is a bill anybody will ever send you, and each gets its own row in the breakdown so the guesswork can be read apart from the arithmetic. Set either to zero to drop it.

Panic buying insurance

When the shelves emptied in 2020, toilet paper went first, and what was left got expensive. A household that has stopped buying the stuff cannot be charged that premium, so the term is the odds of a scare in a given year multiplied by what the scare would have cost you.

Kids find the sprayer year one

The other direction, and the one that costs you: water on the floor, towels, and an hour of your evening. It is charged to the first year only, on the assumption that a household learns. A pressure dial turned down, or a seat with a child lock, lowers the odds.

What moves the answer

The table gives every term a value. This ranks them, by moving each input ±20% with the others held still and measuring how far the ten-year total shifts. Long bars mark the assumptions to check against your own receipts, and the short ones can be argued about all afternoon without changing the answer.

    How this works

    The ranking above says which numbers matter. Here is where each of them came from and which way the default leans, followed by the things left out of the model altogether and, at the end, the households this whole calculation does not work for.

    Paper

    The saving is your annual paper spend multiplied by the slider and nothing else, which is why the slider outranks everything on the sensitivity list. At 50% the total still comes out positive for the default household, though a small household buying cheap paper can land the other way.

    Fuel

    The same slider scales this one, since the runs a bidet prevents are the ones where the house had already run out. It lands near a dollar a year, and it stays on the page at that size because quietly deleting the terms that come out small is how a calculator flatters itself.

    Water

    Roughly 0.10–0.15 gal (0.4–0.6 L) a use, billed at a rate that includes sewer. At the default of three uses per person per day it comes to about $8 a year for four people, and at one use a day it is under $3.

    The two estimates

    Each gets its own row in the breakdown, so you can see how much of the total is guesswork. The kid incident applies to year one only. Payback is walked month by month rather than divided out of an annual average, so a front-loaded cost moves the date by the right amount.

    Not included

    Plumbing failure risk, your time, resale value, septic pump-out intervals, water heating on a warm-water unit, and the environmental case. Septic is real money for rural households and deserves its own arithmetic, which this page does not attempt.

    Reasons it may not pay

    All of the above assumes a household that looks something like the defaults. Six things commonly break that assumption, and any one of them can turn the answer around.

    Cheap paper. The saving is paper spend times the slider, so a household buying store brand in bulk at $0.45 a roll has roughly a third of the saving the defaults assume, and the same hardware cost. Payback stretches accordingly.

    An electric seat. At $450 plus $150 for an electrician, payback runs about 2.4 years on the default household, against about three months for a $60 attachment. The extra cost buys warm water, a heated seat and a dryer, none of which change the paper saving.

    Renting. An attachment is removable and travels, but a seat wired to a new outlet generally is not, and some leases forbid touching the supply line at all. A unit left behind at the end of a lease never reaches the payback date computed above.

    The plumbing. The install assumes a working shutoff valve behind the toilet with a standard fitting. Seized valves, in-wall valves and non-standard fittings turn twenty minutes into a plumber's visit, and that fee goes in the install field.

    Drying habits. Where a household lands in the 60–90% range is decided by how much paper is still used to dry. Someone who uses a generous wad rather than a few squares may be nearer 40–50%, and every figure on the page falls with the slider.

    Cold water. A basic attachment delivers whatever temperature the supply line is at, which in an unheated bathroom in winter is unpleasant enough that people stop using it. Warm water costs $100–160 for an attachment teed into the hot line, or more for a seat.

    If none of those six describe you, what is left is picking a tier, and the gap between them is wider than the price tags make it look.     Our bias, stated plainly

    Anyone publishing a calculator that concludes you should buy something has an interest in that conclusion, and you should read it accordingly.

    Where the model had a choice between two defensible values, it took the one less favorable to the bidet: paper reduction is capped by the slider rather than assumed total, water is billed with sewer at about three times typical usage, and the kid incident is charged to year one in full rather than spread across the life of the unit. Every one of those values is editable.
